In making the case for opening the Florida coast to oil drilling, last week President Bush said that "One obvious solution [to rising demand for oil] is for America to increase our domestic oil production."

No amount of drilling off Florida’s coast is going to change the fact that our nation only has 3% of the world’s oil reserves, and that we consume 25% of the world’s oil supply. Lifting the moratorium would not ease pain at the pump for average Americans. Just last year, the president signed a bill to open 8 million acres to new drilling, and instead of going down, gas prices are now at an all time high.

You should be standing up for our coast, not trying to undermine decades of protection. The United States possesses only 3% of the world's oil reserves, while consuming 25% of the world's oil supply, and oil from such rigs would not be available for at least another seven years. We should be continuing to raise the fuel economy of our cars, pass legislation to override this administration's attempts to block the Clean Cars program, and adopt other, existing energy-saving technologies that cut pollution, curb global warming and create good jobs. These cheaper, cleaner and faster policies reduce short-term demand and costs while also providing long-term solutions to our energy needs, and they do not require us to put our favorite vacation destinations and coastal ecosystems at risk.
