Clean Energy

The way we produce and use energy in Florida has severe impacts on our environment and our public health. More than 90 percent of the state's electricity currently comes from dirty, dangerous sources of energy, including nuclear power and burning fossil fuels.  From the air and water pollution caused by our coal-fired power plants, to the toxic waste created by the state's nuclear power plants, to the energy we waste by not taking advantage of energy efficient technologies, it is obvious we could be doing better.

Environment Florida is working to create a new energy future for Florida.  With clean solar power, crop-based energy sources, new energy-efficiency technologies and less-polluting cars, Florida can reduce its dependence on dirty energy sources and chart a smarter, cleaner energy future.

Fine soot from burning fossil fuels triggers tens of thousands of asthma attacks and cuts short the lives of over 1,700 Floridians every year.

Florida’s growth in electricity demand will likely mean transmission lines across wilderness areas like the Everglades, critical habitat for endangered species like this Florida Panther.
