Letters to the editor in Monday's Sentinel included misguided criticism of
U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson for his vote in favor of landmark energy legislation.
This criticism doesn't take into account the substantial cost of maintaining the
status quo.
America is dependent on fossil fuels
at a time of growing demand and dwindling supply. Beyond the expense of relying
upon unstable regimes and diminishing reverses for our energy lies the
incalculable cost that burning fossil fuels imposes on our health and our
environment.
Now we must choose between persisting in paying the cost of
our dirty, dangerous and outdated ways and investing in a newer, better energy
future.
Grayson wisely chose the latter. The legislation he supported,
while imperfect, provides a necessary framework to spur clean-energy innovation,
protect consumers from rising costs and achieve science-based emissions
reductions. Those concerned with passing such a bill during a recession must
understand that the cost of repairing the damage to the environment only grows
with time. It's in our best interests to act now.
Will this transition to
clean, safe energy come without cost? Certainly not. Will it be the lesser of
two costs, compared with the status quo? Absolutely. And thanks to leaders like
Grayson, Florida and our planet will be better for
it.
