An Environment Florida analysis found that implementing the Clean
Cars program in Florida will reduce global warming emissions by an
amount equal to removing 13.8 million of today’s cars
from the road for a year. Click here to learn more about how the Clean Cars program will benefit Floridians.
Already, more than forty business, public health and conservation groups in Florida have endorsed the Clean Cars program. However, Clean Cars in Florida will only become a reality if the legislature approves it. Environment Florida is asking Governor Crist to make passage of the Clean Cars program his top legislative priority next year.
How You Can Help
The auto industry is lobbying hard to kill the Clean Cars Program
before it even gets started. That is why it is critical that Governor
Crist and our state legislators hear from Floridians that we support a Clean Cars Program for
our state. Click here to send an email to Gov. Crist and your legislators.
Brief Summary
We Can Solve Global Warming
Scientists
have said we need to reduce the pollution that causes global warming by 80% over
the next 50 years. Gov. Crist has taken
a bold first step by laying out a plan that makes Florida a leader in that effort.
One of the most important parts of that plan is a Clean Cars program in Florida, just like
twelve other states have done.
If Florida were to adopt the Clean Cars
program, by 2015, new cars would be required to emit 34 percent less global
warming pollution on average, and light trucks 25 percent less pollution. Tailpipe
emissions of conventional air pollutants will also be reduced, making Florida’s air easier to
breathe.
Cleaner cars are a win-win for Florida.
They would reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and save consumers money at
the gas pump.
It's Time to Act
Environment Florida is calling on
Gov. Crist and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to enact
the Clean Cars program.
We know they support a Florida Clean Cars program, but they must stand firm in
the face of an expected vigorous opposition campaign by car manufacturers and other
powerful special interests.
That is why it is critical that Gov. Crist and the Florida DEP hear from Floridians
that we support a Clean Cars program for our state.
