Crist’s energy bill veto sets the stage for major reforms

Today, Gov. Crist vetoed HB 7123, a wide-ranging bill relating to Florida energy policy

Statement of Environment Florida Field Director Holly Binns:

“Governor Crist has sent a clear signal that renewable energy, energy conservation and reducing global warming pollution are his top priorities.  For far too long, Florida’s energy policy has focused on building expensive, polluting fossil fuel power plants, instead of investing in energy efficiency and clean energy sources like solar, wind and bio-fuels.

A recent Environment Florida report found that Florida ranks 2nd nationwide for the largest increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Often, we think of Florida as being in the crosshairs of global warming, but the reality is, we’re also pulling the trigger.

The single most important thing that Governor Crist can do to put Florida on the path to a smarter, cleaner energy future is to issue a moratorium on the construction of new coal-fired power plants.

We look forward to working with Governor Crist and other state policy-makers to craft policies that will make Florida a leader in reducing global warming pollution and jump start a clean energy economy.”
