Save Florida's Shores
In 1990, the Florida Legislature banned drilling off our world-famous coastline. Now, as some leaders in Tallahassee begin to waver, we're calling on our legislators to maintain — and strengthen — that promise.
Stop the next drilling disaster
Tens of millions of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, after the BP rig exploded.
Despite this accident, oil companies are still pushing to expand drilling to more than half of Florida's waters on the Gulf Coast.
Big Oil's plans for our beaches
Incredibly, the oil industry is still aggressively pushing legislation that threatens our world-famous beaches and estuaries.
And some of Florida's elected leaders are still supporting proposals that would promote drilling closer to our beaches and undermine Florida's existing protections — including a repeal of the ban on drilling just six miles offshore. In December 2010, the Obama administration announced a ban on offshore oil and gas drilling in new areas, including the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. However, legal and legislative efforts to allow expanded drilling are underway. That means we still have a great deal of work ahead of us.
As the president appears to waver, it's more important than ever to call on our state leaders to strengthen Florida’s ban on drilling within state waters and embrace meaningful energy reform that will ease our dependence on oil.
With your activism and advocacy, we can protect our beaches
We refuse to let our leaders open the door to drilling in our state waters. And we have a plan to defend our world-famous coastline. We're bringing together Floridians from all walks of life to protect our beaches from destructive drilling. All of us — fishers, boaters, snorkelers, tourism businessees and Floridians across the state — have something to fight for.
Our citizen outreach staff has knocked on doors throughout Florida to educate citizens about what's at stake. We've also testified in Tallahassee, educating lawmakers, and shining a spotlight in the media on the need to protect our beaches, from Pensacola to Key West.
Thousands of you have joined the fight too, calling or emailing your legislators, signing petitions, and spreading the word to your friends and family.
Tell our leaders in Tallahassee to make good on their original promise — and protect our world-famous coastline.
